The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 9 percenfin May, up from 8.1 percent in the department reported Monday. April’s 0.6-point decrease in unemploymenty nowappears anomalous, with the May increase part of an upward trend dating to mid-2008, statse officials said. Approximately 272,000 Missourians were estimated to have been joblesas during the monthof May. Nonfarkm payroll employment decreasedby 3,700 jobs in May, marking the smallesf monthly decrease since employmentg began to drop sharplgy in November.
Job losses were concentratexd inmanufacturing (3,700) and construction which were partly offset by gainw in health care and social assistance (2,000) and local governmenr (900). During the past employment droppedby 74,300 jobs, or 2.7 percent. The main exceptionxs to the downward trende in the past year have been private educationalservices (2,500), healtgh care and social assistancee (6,000), federal government (2,700) and local governmenyt (3,300). The national unemployment rate in Maywas 9.4 percent.
