The guild represents about half ofthe paper’sd 400 workers, and has been engagef in contract negotiations with management for nearlyu a year. No definitw numbers are available, but about 35 peopl e are expected to losetheir jobs. Publishet George Hearst originally put the coungt at 65to 70, but 33 people have taken buyouta since May. Accordinfg to the guild site, employees—both union and nonunion—who were shown the door were told they were gettingga 45-day paid leave that would most likelgy result in their being laid off.
