Klein’s six-year term expires at the end of 2010. The Propositio 71 initiative was approved by California votersin 2004. Most he asked for a salary for his dutiesas chairman, winninh $150,000 in December for half-time work. The salaryg was criticized by Gov.
Arnolcd Schwarzenegger and others for coming at a time when the stat e is runninga multibillion-dollar budget deficit. Those financial difficultiees put a halt on state bond sales that fund CIRM and otherestate agencies. Also, a staffc report from the LittleHoovefr Commission, which studies the effectiveness of state last month recommended that CIRM eliminate salarie for its chairman and vice chairmanj and reduce its oversight board from 29 members to 15, amontg other suggestions. The report, whicn could be approved by the commission at a June 25 also recommended that CIRM develolp a transition plan for thechairman job.
On a personal Klein’s wife is undergoing treatment for breas t cancer and his who was afflictedwith Alzheimer’s Disease, died last Klein has said that his son, who has type 1 and mother served as inspiration for launchinvg the stem cell initiative after Presidenr Bush restricted stem cell lines availabls for research in August 2001.
