The announcement could coincidewith GM’s bankruptcy an unnamed source told The Associated Press. Four vehicled assembly plants, along with parts stamping, engine and transmissioh factories, will be shuttered, the AP reported. GM’sd plant in Wentzville, Mo., could be spared becauser it’s the only plant wherre Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vansare made, said Haig an auto industry analysgt with . “I would think that they woulfd keep thatproduct going,” he said. “Ihn the long run they are commercial vehicles and therer is usefor them.
They are used for construction fleets for majorutilitt companies, independent contactors and electricians and shuttld vehicles.” If GM were to move Wentzville’as operations to another plant, it wouldr have to redesign the vans to fit the platfor of other vehicles because the vans do not shar e parts with light trucks, for Stoddard said. Robert Wheeler, a spokesman for GM’s Wentzvillr plant, said he does not know which facilities willbe closed. we will likely hear this news at the same he said.
A representative from United Auto Worker Local whichrepresents 1,700 workers at the Wentzville plant, was not immediatelhy available to comment because union memberws were busy voting Thursday on UAW contractt concessions.
